MonaLisa Touch

What is MonaLisa Touch?

*Individual results may vary; not a guarantee.

MonaLisa Touch is a minimally invasive treatment designed to address symptoms associated with vaginal atrophy, including irritative symptoms, itching and dryness as well as painful intercourse.* For some patients, this painless procedure has also aided in relieving overactive bladder symptoms and mild symptoms of vaginal laxity.* This gentle laser treatment benefits your body’s vaginal tissue by producing more collagen, which can minimize the symptoms of vaginal atrophy.* Lasers, like MonaLisa Touch, are increasingly being used in medicine because of their ability to promote tissue renewal and healing.*

What are the causes of vaginal atrophy?

Atrophy can occur when vaginal tissues thin out, causing inflammation. When estrogen levels drop in a woman’s body, e.g. after childbirth or during menopause, perimenopause or postmenopause, symptoms of vaginal atrophy may develop.

How does the laser work?

This laser utilizes CO2 fractional laser technology, which emit tiny beams of energy that stimulate new collagen production, naturally increasing blood flow and lubrication to help improve the function of the vagina.* Treatments can support healthy vaginal Ph levels, bladder function and pain associated with intercourse.* The procedure takes about five minutes in Dr. Douglas Waterman’s New Westminster office. A topical local Anesthetic cream is applied. Most patients report that the procedure is painless.*

How many treatments are needed?

This painless treatment is repeated at six-week intervals for a total of three treatments.* Most women report immediate results, seeing improvement after only one treatment.* The reason three treatments are recommended is to ensure improvements will last several months to a year.* In the years following, it may be necessary to return for a single, yearly five-minute treatment.*

Is there downtime?

Women may resume normal activities and routines immediately following the procedure, however it is recommended to abstain from sexual activity for two days post-procedure.*

Does the procedure hurt?

Performed without anesthesia except for a topical numbing cream, women who have received MonaLisa Touch treatments have reported virtually no pain.* Most patients feel only a slight vibration from the laser.*

Who benefits from MonaLisa Touch?

Post-menopausal women fall within the largest category of patients being treated with this device, followed by any patient who has confirmed vaginal atrophy. However, it is also an appropriate treatment for breast cancer survivors who are unable to take hormone replacement therapy due to their history.* It is also a proven ineffective treatment for patients with lichen sclerosis.*
